Specter warns Bush on high court nominations
Emailed to me
I sent Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist the following email:
I'm writing to urge you to use your influence as Majority Leader to prevent Arlen Specter from becoming chairman of the Senate Judiciary committee.
His recent promise to work against pro-life nominees is not only harmful to the pro-life cause but also to Republican Party. Allowing someone who has made such a commitment (even if he does renounce it) to ascend to a position of leadership could cause great damage to the Republican Party as voters who care about moral issue such as the right to life turn to other sources. Without these voters, we could not have re-elected President Bush and will have great difficulty in the future.
I understand that this action could drive Senator Specter to switch parties. However, as the saying goes, better a snake in the grass than an viper in the bosom. A party switch by Senator Specter would still leave the Republicans with a majority of the Senate. This majority, although smaller, would be more unified and therefore stronger.
As a former local Republican party official, I ask you to help strengthen our Party.
I think all pro-lifers should send him something similar.

My wife and I were having breakfast, as we waited for our food, we eavesdropped on the conversation of six male college aged students at a nearby table. They were in total agreement that George Bush won only because he "had hotter daughters than John Kerry."

"The merit of our Constitution was, not that it promotes democracy, but checks it." --Horatio Seymour
"The right to be heard does not automatically include the right to be taken seriously." --Hubert Humphrey
George W. Bush needs just one Electoral College vote to get him
over the top. I'm going to take this as a done deal, and start
gloating. Now, gloating is of course bad -- coarse, heartless,
insensitive, and ill-mannered. Magnanimity in victory, that's
the thing. Humility, grace, gentlemanly forbearance, there but
for the grace of God... YEEEEEEEE-HAAAAAAAAA!" --John Derbyshire

Out of the mouths of babes...
"Let each citizen remember at the moment he is offering his vote that he is not making a present or a compliment to please an individual -- or at least that he ought not so to do; but that he is executing one of the most solemn trusts in human society for which he is accountable to God and his country." --Samuel Adams
"Vote: The instrument and symbol of a free man's power to make a fool of himself and a wreck of his country." --Ambrose Bierce
"Modern liberalism tosses the scripture out on several different levels. How a true believer in the Christ defined by the scripture can buy into what Jesus, the prophets and apostles said and also what these secular thugs say is beyond me.
In addition to liberalism's obvious and odious pro-holocaust-like abortion stance, its anti-biblical view of marriage, its scripture-slamming aggressive secularism, and its feckless view of our nation's defense, liberalism completely clashes with the
Christian worldview. Secular liberalism's aggressive desire to eradicate Christians' rights should cause Christians to be concerned. The Democrat Party's liberalism has degenerated over the last 40-50 years in regard to its view of Christianity and Christian rights. This party, which formerly embraced and protected our nation's great Christian heritage and teachings, no longer does so. Thus, today the Christian is between a rock and a hard place: he can either be a Christian or a liberal, but he cannot be both." --Doug Giles

I could be Calvin in this one
This is really impressive
Laughing at Satan!
But He said to them, "I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other cities also; for I was sent for this purpose."
"The sin of Service is the sin of Satan," said G.K. Chesterton. Taken by itself, this arresting statement sounds weird, but in context it makes sense. Chesterton is complaining about boosters and social gospel types who put a capital "S" on Service and make it the highest good. His complaint is well-founded when we realize this. For, of course, members of the Waffen SS had a strong devotion to Service, but it didn't exactly make them saints. Rather it unveiled the evil that comes of taking a secondary thing (like the Fatherland) and making it the primary thing (like God). Lucifer did the same thing with himself and, in the process, became Satan. Jesus served, but He always kept His perspective. Service was for one purpose: to preach the Good News of the Kingdom of God.
And He said to them, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven."
There are two ways of looking at Halloween. Sure, from a Christian perspective it's not especially great to have the kidlets dressing up as the devil and whatnot. On the other hand, look at it from the devil's perspective. You revolted against God and fell from heaven in this primordial struggle against God Almighty Himself. In your titanic pride you had high hopes of establishing yourself supreme in the universe. You committed your greatest act of terrorism against God when you convinced His own precious Adam and Eve to revolt against Him. You brought death into the human race and you thought you had it made when God, as it appeared to you, insanely chose to become human. On Good Friday you finally had Him in your hand and you killed Him with all the savagery your fallen angelic mind could invent. And now, for two thousand years, you've been watching your revolt crumble as the Risen One turned all your schemes into life for your victims and mockery for you. Now, so far from ruling the universe, your face is on some stupid mask worn by a 6-year-old and the creatures you hoped to destroy are writing meditations like this one to pull your pointy nose and remind you that the Christ you killed has defeated you utterly. Memo to Satan: Happy Halloween, loser!
All Saint's Day
But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins.
The Church is often absurdly divided between those called "Progressive" and those called "Traditionalist." The "Traditionalist" is thought to be the foe of the "Progressive." But it is the nature of orthodoxy both to conserve Tradition and to progress, as in today's gospel. This being so, it is often the heterodox who are both "Traditionalist" and "Progressive," since the former is pining for the Good Old Days while the latter is often simply falling for faddism. Today, we often see this paradox played out with the Holy Father, who is following the logic of the Spirit in the Second Vatican Council and leaving both "Traditionalists" (who want the Old Wine of the pre-conciliar Church) and "Progressives" (who want the Near Beer of watered-down Catholic Faith) covered in confusion as he faithfully drinks and shares the New Wine of the Spirit. Truly creative and loving orthodoxy trumps myopic political categories every time.
So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.
Question: What do you call a "fellow citizen with an American"?
Answer: An American
Question: What do you call a "fellow citizen with a saint"?
Answer: A saint.
In short, if you believe in Jesus, you are a saint. Enjoy your Feast Day! (And if you haven't been acting too saintly, God is quite willing to accept a change of heart and help you become what you are!)
