I Love Zell Miller
Read the reaction from Democrats to this news. It makes it clear that when Democrats say they want more bipartisanship, they really mean they want Republicans to give in to their wishes. Democrats, meanwhile, are not to support Republicans.

Political Party Affiliation is not the best indicator of someone's values
Just because William Weld and Jane Swift are registered Republican, doesn't mean that they _are_ Republicans. We call them RINOs (Republican In Name Only)

Should it surprise me it's the Army that's wimping out?
You'd think the military of all institutions would kave the backbone to tell the anti-religionists to "suck it".

Catholic Senators and the Federal Marriage Amendment
Opposed:
Joseph Biden (D-DE)
John Breaux (D-LA)
Maria Cantwell (D-WA)
Susan Collins (R-ME)
Tom Daschle (D-SD)
Christopher Dodd (D-CT)
Richard Durbin (D-IL)
Tom Harkin (D-IA)
Ted Kennedy (D-MA)
John Kerry (D-MA)
Mary Landrieu (D-LA)
Patrick Leahy (D-VT)
Barbara Mikulski (D-MD)
Patty Murray (D-WA)
John Reed (D-RI)

Undecided:
Mike DeWine (R-OH)
Lisa Murkowski (R-AK)
John Sununu (R-NH)
George Voinovich (R-OH)

Supporting:
Jim Bunning (R-KY)
Pete Domenici (R-NM)
Peter Fitzgerald (R-IL)
Sam Brownback (R-KS)
Rick Santorum (R-PA)

Note the party affiliations of those opposed? (The one exception might as well be a member of the other party.) I'll never understand why some argue that party best represents the Catholic point of view.

The difference between Democrats and Republicans

"No one steals from God!"
We need more priests like this.

Chuck Asay is just brilliant

Is Kerry anti-poor?
Probably not, but if not, why does he want to throw so many of them out of work by raising the minimum wage?

15 Strikeouts in 5 Innings Pitched
Link above is a news story.

Batter by batter breakdown:
1st: groundout, then 2 strikeouts
2nd: 4 strikeouts (dropped 3rd strike/error by 1B allowed that to happen)
3rd: struck out the side
4th: struck out the side
5th: double, then 3 strikeouts

Boxscore

His pitching line:
IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA
L.Ramirez 5.0 1 0 0 0 15 0 0.90

He didn't even get the win because the first reliever gave up 4 runs while getting no one out.

Thomas Sowell's Random Thoughts
His "Random Thoughts" columns are always interesting and entertaining:

Although Ronald Reagan was the only actor to become President, he was one of the few politicians who was not acting.

Those who are preoccupied with "making a statement" usually don't have any statements worth making.

Before women's fashions began to feature exposed navels, I had no idea how many gals had unattractive midriffs

Somethings are just too cool for words
The Pope Meets the Harlem Globetrotters.

It was suggested that Buffy the Vampire Slayer would be a Democrat
My response:
I think Buffy would be a Democrat. But as Willow once said: "You know Buffy, sweet girl, not that bright."

This is old, but still funny
FEMALE INTERVIEWER: So, General Reinwald, what things are you going to teach these young boys when they visit your base?
GENERAL REINWALD: We're going to teach them climbing, canoeing, archery, and shooting.
FEMALE INTERVIEWER: Shooting! That's a bit irresponsible, isn't it?
GENERAL REINWALD: I don't see why, they'll be properly supervised on the rifle range.
FEMALE INTERVIEWER: Don't you admit that this is a terribly dangerous activity to be teaching children?
GENERAL REINWALD: I don't see how. We will be teaching them proper rifle discipline before they
even touch a firearm.
FEMALE INTERVIEWER: But you're equipping them to become violent killers.
GENERAL REINWALD: Well, you're equipped to be a prostitute, but you're not one, are you?

The radio went silent and the interview ended.

Why are New Yorkers always so depressed?
Because the light at the end of the tunnel is New Jersey.

This is nuts
President Bush plans to unveil next month a sweeping mental health initiative that recommends screening for every citizen and promotes the use of expensive antidepressants and antipsychotic drugs favored by supporters of the administration.

I hope, I hope, I hope this isn't true, but if it is, this is where it could easily lead.

Curiouser and Curiouser...
Ok, I think Gordon is trying to use Williams to put all the blame for the activity on Freebery. Still doesn't explain why Williams is letting himself be used....

Making a deal with the Devil (Rays)
Ok, someone explain how the Devil Rays have won 11 in a row and are in third place. I can't.

Griffey's 500th
It was good to see Griffey reach 500 finally. Who would have ever thought it would take him this long?

His post-game interview was hilarious. Saying his father would be getting the same gift as he does everything Father's Day: "Old Spice and underwear." Hopefullly the great season he's having will go a long way to repair the damage to his reputation. He still loves to play the game, and it kills him when he can't due to injury.

Cardinal George on Communion
Q: Are you concerned, though, that if the bishops do decide to unanimously impose sanctions, it could lead to a situation where anyone who dissents from any Church teaching cannot be considered a full member of the Church?

A: Well, abortion is a particularly important issue. It’s unique, it’s life and death, it’s intrinsically immoral. It’s not the same as "can there be just wars?" or that "the state still has the right in theory to execute someone who’s a threat to safety, although we should do it in another way now as we have the means to put them into prison."

My other current reading

For while I'm eating or just not in the mood for reading something that requires thought and reflection.

My Current Reading

Dr. Scott Hahn explains the sacraments in light of them as the continual renewal of God's covenant with us.

Bishops Leave Door Open for Communion to be denied to Pro-Abortion Politicians
Calls support for abortion "Participating in evil."

I can't shake the feeling that the committee they have looking into the question is merely a device to postpone the decision until after the election since they don't want to be seen as interfering with it. I have no doubt (especially if Kerry wins) that they will endorse denying Communion to pro-abortion politicians. They can't allow it to be seen as an acceptable Catholic position any longer. Too much damage has already been done.

Speaking Italian

My favorite thing about this past week's Italian Festival was hearing all the older Italians walking by saying "howyoudoin'?" to my neighbors. Cracks me up every time.

More on "Just Friends"
I was discussing the situation with another friend yesterday. He agreed; to paraphrase him: "'Just friends' means you'll wave if you see each other on the street." To which I responded, "Yeah, and you have to use all five fingers, and not just one."

Ladies, if you give us the "just friends" speech, leave us alone for a while.
